Faculty and Student Awards

ASEE Pacific Southwest (PSW) Section invites nominations for the 2019 ASEE PSW Section Awards. There are two awards: Section Outstanding Teaching Award and Section Undergraduate Student Award. The eligibility criteria and the nomination process of each award are described below. Both awards will be presented at the ASEE PSW Conference which will be held at the California State University, Los Angeles, on April 4-6, 2019.

PSW Section Outstanding Teaching Award:
The ASEE PSW Section Outstanding Teaching Award recognizes an exemplary Engineering or Engineering Technology colleague. The finalist also will be put forth from the Section as a candidate for the ASEE National Outstanding Teaching Award.

Eligibility:  Candidates may be ASEE Members who are teachers of any subject included in an ABET/CEAB accredited Engineering or Engineering Technology curriculum. In addition to technical courses, subjects may include the humanities and social studies, mathematics and science.

Nomination Process: To nominate someone, you must login as an ASEE member at ASEE.org and select your name at the top of the screen. Scroll down to “Awards Nominations,” select “Nominate someone for an award,” select the radio button for “ASEE Section Outstanding Teaching Award â€“Pacific Southwest Section,” scroll back up to the top of the screen, and select the “Next: Find Person” button to begin taking you through the nomination process. The nomination is due by January 15, 2019.

Award Notification: The finalist will be notified by February 26, 2019. The finalist will receive $1000 and a certificate of appreciation to be presented at the ASEE PSW Conference to be held at the California State University, Los Angeles, on April 4-6, 2019. The finalist will be eligible to be nominated for the ASEE National Outstanding Teaching Award in the subsequent year.

 

PSW Section Undergraduate Student Award:
The ASEE PSW Section Undergraduate Student Award provides recognition of undergraduate engineering or engineering technology students who display strong achievement in design projects, research, community service, or education-related activities.

Eligibility:  The student must be an undergraduate currently enrolled in an engineering or engineering technology program in a four-year university or community college within the ASEE PSW region (Arizona, California, Hawaii, and Nevada) at the time of submission. The nomination must be submitted by a faculty member or an advisor. The recommender must be an ASEE member in good standing. 

Award Criteria: Recognizing that any one or all of the below criteria may be relevant to a particular submission, the application should address all applicable areas, including:  (1) Excellence in classroom or laboratory assistance for engineering or technology courses; (2) Outstanding performance in a design capstone project; (3) Community work related to engineering education; (4) Support in K-12 activities that promote science and math education, and/or student motivation to become engineers; (5) Outstanding contributions to engineering student organizational activities that support the educational mission of the institution; (6) Scholastic excellence (Note: The nominee must have a minimum 3.0/4.0 GPA at time of nomination).

Application Requirements:  (1) A letter of nomination (maximum 500 words) from a faculty, an advisor, or an administrator; (2) A personal statement (maximum 500 words) from the student addressing his/her accomplishments. The statement must be completed using the student statement template; (3) Optional additional letters of recommendation (Maximum of 2 additional letters).

Submission:   The nominator must directly send the nomination package via email to Student Award Vice Chair, Dr. Jeffrey Ashworth, at ashworj@erau.edu by January 31, 2019, with a subject line of "ASEE PSW Student Award + Student Name." (Note: File type in PDF preferred)

Award Notification:  ASEE PSW board members will review and select the winning candidate based upon the above criteria. A cash prize of $250 plus travel assistance (assistance not to exceed $500) will be presented to one finalist at the ASEE PSW Conference to be held at the California State University, Los Angeles, on April 4-6, 2019. The conference registration fee also will be waived. The finalist will be notified by February 26, 2018.
